I want to wake up in a city ravaged by aliens...New...Yooooorrrk!

A few months back I bought Crysis 2 for PC and The 3rd Birthday on the PSP on the same day - coincidentally, both games that involve fighting through a ruined and besieged New York City. Difference is, one is good, and the other is something besides good.

Now, I've never actually played the original Parasite Eves on the Playstation One, but I'd hazard a guess The 3rd Birthday is nothing like the first two; the story is unrelated to - and indeed, spits in the face of - the previous games, with the kind of convoluted, inscrutable story worthy only of Final Fantasy XIII writer Motomu Toriyama.

Maybe it's also the fact that I've been spoiled by the superb MGS: Peace Walker, but as an action game The 3rd Birthday is piss poor. As with most Japanese shooters, the guns are predictably weak, and the lock-on targeting system reduces the player input to running back and forth. The encounters are also split into tightly segregated kill rooms, wreaking havoc on the shoulder camera (though that does allow you to marvel at the visuals).

However, the game really gets intense after the halfway point, where the focus becomes more tactical strategy, jumping rapidly between soldiers for different lines of sight and weapon loadouts or vehicles for enemies with very specific weaknesses. At the time I was really frustrated at how unfairly difficult some stages were, but in hindsight I probably had the most fun while I was desperately dodging enemies with low health, praying for fresh reinforcements to Dive into.

If you're a Parasite Eve fan, don't touch this game. For everyone else, give it a try.

In other news, Crysis 2 was simply amazing.

For those more attentive to motif, I based the original pose off of the famous poster for Army of Darkness: [link] Originally it was supposed to be Crysis Guy in the lead pose, but a certain someone suggested this genius reversal.

This one took me over two months, all told, as I put off doing the background for several weeks at a time, erasing and redrawing all those pesky buildings. In the end it was a lot less grand than I'd envisioned (story of my art) but I just wanted to get it out there and off my shoulders.

I really love how you make the pixels, the fun posing, and the unusual colors work.

Hail to the king baby.

Damn you godsavant and getting me interesting in games I've never heard of. The 3rd Birthday I heard of, but yeah, I know nothing of Crysis 2.

Uh pffft, I commend you for managing to dodge EA's massive marketing campaign for the game. It's still full-price at the moment, but I definitely recommend you pick it up. It's hands-down the most innovative and freeform shooter I've played in the past few years.

Yeah, a lot of people wouldn't like it, I didn't expect it to follow anywhere close to the original games, but i'm more or less just playing it for the appreciation of what it is. Hey, Square Enix probably didn't NEED to make it, they do have Final Fantasy, anyways. Parasite Eve wasn't all that popular but, hey, Aya finally has a voice (oh my god) and I've come to love the characters in 3rd Birthday anyways. So, honestly, the plot is still good, but it requires a lot of playing through to realize what was happening.
We also kind of gathered that, Gabrielle, being from Baltimore, is not messed with often.
Because she can probably whoop someone'as ass. xD Yay, Gabby.

As much as I wanted to see some stuff from the old games, the remixed OST was good enough for me.
But I still hae Kyle Madigan. I never liked him for some reason. >:l
